How Gun Metal reads
From standing height, Gun Metal reads as a medium charcoal gray. Up close, black and white flecks stand out against that field, so the floor has definition without the busy look of an equal-parts blend.
More than half the chips are one color, charcoal, and that color sets the overall tone. The rest, about 45%, splits evenly between black, pale gray and white. The pale gray and the charcoal both lean slightly cool, so the floor reads cool-neutral rather than warm.

Where Gun Metal works
- Daily-driver garages. A mid gray field is forgiving on a floor that sees cars, boots and tools every day.
- Shops and service bays. It looks like a working floor without reading dark or gloomy under shop lights.
- When the homeowner cannot decide. If Checkmate feels too busy and Midnight Granite too dark, Gun Metal sits between them.
Dirt, tire marks and dust on Gun Metal
Gun Metal is the most even-handed of our grays. Its mid gray field sits between dark tire marks and light dust, and its black and white accents give both somewhere to hide.
It will not hide light dust quite as well as Checkmate, which has more than twice the white, or dark grime as well as Midnight Granite's darker field. For a floor that sees mud in one season and dust in another, that balance is the point.
What base coat goes under Gun Metal?
Tint the base coat medium gray to match the charcoal chip. With more than half the blend in that one color, a thin spot over a matching base is hard to find.
A white or black base only works if every square foot is broadcast to refusal. Otherwise, any thin spot shows as a patch of white or black in the middle of the charcoal. The base coat build itself comes from your resin manufacturer's system guide.
Matching an existing floor
Gun Metal is comparable in color to Wombat (Torginol). Wombat also reads as a charcoal-led gray with black, pale gray and white flecks.
For a repair, an addition or a second bay next to an existing Wombat floor, broadcast a test board with our chips, lay it against the old floor before committing, and email Adam with the job details first.
Ordering for one car garages and double broadcast
A one car garage of 240 to 288 sq ft takes 1 or 2 boxes at a full broadcast. Order 2 unless you know your crew broadcasts light, because a single 44 lb box leaves almost no margin.
| Floor | Boxes to order | Flake needed |
|---|---|---|
| 240 sq ft (12 x 20 ft) | 1 to 2 | 40 to 48 lb |
| 264 sq ft (12 x 22 ft) | 2 | 44 to 53 lb |
| 288 sq ft (12 x 24 ft) | 2 | 48 to 58 lb |
| 400 sq ft, double broadcast | 4 | 134 to 160 lb |
Low numbers assume the typical 0.167 lb per sq ft; high numbers assume the 0.20 planning rate. At 264 sq ft the typical rate needs about 44.1 lb, just over one box, so order 2. Double-broadcast systems use about twice the flake of a single broadcast, which is why the last row needs 4 boxes for a floor that takes 2 when broadcast once. One box is $85 and two are $170, before freight. The flake calculator handles other sizes.
